Bean Tech: The Virgin Roaster

First Fruits

The machine belched smoke and popped like it was as though it were alive. The onlookers were in a state of awe. From an outside perspective, the scene must have looked like cavemen seeing original fire slash the sky and crack like thunder. Dreams were being hatched and taste buds began to salivate. Which caffeinated concoctions would be born first? The machine was producing its first fruits, and the offering was already being coveted by the overlords watching.

Welcome to the Virgin Roaster

The Behmor 1600 Plus gourmet coffee roaster arrival signaled a new dawn for coffee and espresso beverage drinking at T2D. We are a caffeinated lot to be sure .

On our coffee workbench (That is correct, I said workbench) there are no fewer than 8 different coffee delivery systems. We have a traditional coffee pot, three different espresso machines including an Italian/Cuban Imusa, S-bux Barista, and Saeco, as well as differing French press sizes. Last but not least, an antique coffee drip pot with another espresso machine about to be ordered. And now, we have a roaster to deliver high-end, home-roasted beans to all those machines.

Unboxing

The box arrived with no particular fanfare, but within the plain brown packaging contained the genesis of fresh roasted goodness. Formulas of specialty brews began coming to life, would-be creations mixed with thoughts of grandeur sprang to into existence.

Then stark cold realization hit “How does this thing work!” and my grand schemes of caffeinated bliss came to a screeching halt. I’ve met a few roasters over the years both home and professional and heard a few stories about the difficulties and triumphs in roasting. I figured, how hard can it be? LOL…
